| Originally from the Washington DC area, Jim's first instrument was trumpet with extensive playing experience in concert band and orchestra through high school and college at University of North Carolina. He developed a strong interest in jazz during college years and began playing piano within that context. He played trumpet in the United States Army Band, and the United States Army's professional band in Washington DC during the Vietnam war era, and began serious work on piano, studying with Gene Rush, a student of Bill Evans. Following completion of a degree in mathematics at th University of North Carolina, he began playing music professionally in the DC area, including a stint with Clint Holmes of Las Vegas fame. After relocating to North Carolina in the 1970's, he played Top 40 with various bands. Following a brief return to school in electronics, he found a deep calling in microprocessor hardware/software design and worked 25 intense years as an electrical engineer during which time music was on the back burner. Following many life changes, he re-entered the music scene where jazz has once again become his primary focus. |
